In the late eighteenth century, a continued fascination
with classical antiquity provided the impetus for the development of neoclassicism. Straight lines and
delicate ornament, including inlaid decoration became the norm. An exquisite card table found in the 5th
floor Montmorenci Stair Hall is the inspiration for the Evalina Writing Desk and Bedside Table. The
antique table, characteristic of the work of Boston father and son cabinetmakers John and Thomas
Seymour, exhibits the same canted and ovolo corners on the top and tapered legs with baluster and spool
turnings as the form designed by Hickory Chair Company's artists.
