In the Music Room at Winterthur Museum sits a diminutive early 19th-century teakettle stand. The stand inspired Hickory Chair designers in the creation of the Imlay Chest. The Imlay chest features decorative knobs that are based on historic hardware in the museum collection. The knobs were inspired by pins commonly referred to as cloak pins, curtain pins, and cabinet handles, which were made in England in the early 1800s and are decorated with a transfer-printed image of the Marquis de Lafayette. Knobs such as this were Henry Francis du Pont used the knobs for hanging fireplace equipment at the Winterthur estate. The Imlay chest features American Walnut Veneers and Walnut Solids, and two drawers constructed with dovetail joints and wood glides.
